Violent Attack Sparks Unrest in Assam Tea Estate
Tension continues to grip Rupai tea estate in Tinsukia district following the brutal murder of a 48-year-old woman and the critical injury of her daughter-in-law in a violent attack that occurred late on Monday night. The incident has triggered widespread unrest among local residents, leading to protests and arson across the community.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Sheela Nanda, a resident of 14 No. Line in Rupai tea estate, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital after being attacked with a sharp weapon. Her 25-year-old daughter-in-law, Rashmi Karmakar, remains in critical condition at a medical facility in Dibrugarh.
Police confirmed that the accused, Narottam Bhumij, allegedly forced his way into Sheela's residence and launched the assault following a heated argument. Witnesses described the weapon used as a sharp-edged blade during the violent confrontation.
Community Outrage and Police Response
The situation escalated dramatically on Tuesday evening when Sheela's body was brought home from the morgue. Enraged residents went on a rampage, setting multiple houses and shops ablaze while vandalizing an e-rickshaw. Protesters demanded that Bhumij be handed over for mob justice.
Law enforcement authorities acted swiftly, arresting the accused before the angry crowd could reach him. Tinsukia additional SP Himanshu Das stated on Wednesday: "We have arrested the main accused and deployed additional forces to maintain law and order. The situation is under control, and all aspects of the case are being investigated."
A resident of the tea estate commented on the volatile situation: "The situation became uncontrollable for some time, but police intervention prevented further escalation."
Possible Motive Behind the Attack
Investigators suspect the violent attack may be linked to Rashmi's social activism work in the community. Sources revealed that she had been actively working with a women's organization, conducting awareness meetings across the tea estate to combat anti-social activities.
Her initiatives particularly targeted the sale and consumption of bootleg liquor, locally known as sulai, which may have angered elements involved in the illicit trade.
The line chowkidar of Rupai tea estate confirmed: "Rashmi has been leading awareness programmes against such activities, which made her a target." This suggests her anti-crime initiatives may have provoked retaliation from those involved in illegal activities.

Police authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway into the tragic incident. Additional security forces have been deployed under Baghjan Police Station jurisdiction to prevent any further violence and maintain peace in the troubled area.
