Tragic Dona Paula Crash Claims Life of Young Apprentice
In a devastating incident on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, a 23-year-old Karnataka native, Diksha Parwadkar, lost her life, and her colleague, D Arunkumar, 26, a resident of Margao, sustained serious injuries. The tragedy unfolded in Dona Paula when the two-wheeler they were traveling on was struck from behind by a new Mini Cooper driven by Darius Myles Dias, 22.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The accident occurred as Darius was proceeding from Dona Paula towards Bambolim in his Mini Cooper, which had a temporary registration and still had a ribbon tied to the door handle, indicating it was newly purchased. According to eyewitness accounts, the speeding car approached the Taj Convention Centre junction, where the two-wheeler was crossing the road. The impact was so severe that both the rider and pillion rider were flung into the air and landed on the road, with the two-wheeler coming to a stop over 50 meters from the point of collision.
The force of the crash caused the Mini Cooper's airbag to deploy and resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle's bonnet, headlamps, front bumper, and front windshield. Parwadkar and Arunkumar, who were on their way home after work at the front office of Taj Convention Centre, were immediately shifted to a private hospital for treatment. Tragically, Parwadkar succumbed to her injuries, while Arunkumar remains under medical care.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Panaji Police Inspector Vijaykumar Chodankar confirmed that Darius, the son of businessman Andrew Dias, has been arrested in connection with the accident. The police have registered a First Information Report under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing death by negligence. Chodankar stated that while a preliminary alcohol test on Darius returned negative, blood samples have been collected and sent for further medical analysis to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The results of these tests are currently awaited.
Community Concerns and Safety Demands
In the wake of this tragedy, local residents have voiced concerns about road safety in the area. One community member demanded that the government install speed breakers at the spot, citing that the stretch between Dona Paula and Bambolim often becomes a racing track for youths. This call for action highlights ongoing issues with speeding and reckless driving in the region, which have now culminated in this fatal accident.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by negligent driving, especially on roads frequented by pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. As the investigation continues, authorities are urged to implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
