Dowry Harassment Tragedy: Mother Allegedly Kills Children, Dies by Suicide in Hyderabad

A suspected case of dowry harassment ended in profound tragedy in Gollagudem village near Bibinagar, where a 28-year-old woman allegedly smothered her two young children before dying by suicide at her in-laws' house on Monday night. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted the persistent issue of dowry-related violence.

Victims Identified as Aishwarya and Her Children

The deceased were identified as Aishwarya, her two-year-old daughter Janaki, and her 10-month-old son Pandu. Police have registered a case following a formal complaint lodged by the woman's grieving family. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this devastating event.

"The exact cause of the children's death is yet to be ascertained. It is suspected that they were smothered," stated Bhuvanagiri deputy SP B Ravindar, emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the precise circumstances.

Background of the Marriage and Alleged Harassment

Aishwarya had married Mahesh Yadav, a railway track maintenance worker from Gollagudem in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, approximately four-and-a-half years ago. According to her family members, the marriage began to encounter serious trouble about two years ago due to alleged dowry harassment.

Around one-and-a-half years ago, Aishwarya moved to her parents' home in Vemulakonda along with her children, seeking refuge from the distressing situation. After elders from both families intervened, the couple eventually agreed to resume living together in an attempt to reconcile.

The Fateful Night and Discovery

On Monday evening, Aishwarya's relatives dropped her and the children at her in-laws' house, hoping for a fresh start. Yadav left for his duty later that night, leaving the family at home.

The next morning, when Aishwarya and the children did not step out of their room, her mother-in-law Satyamma grew concerned and forced open the bedroom door around 7:30 am. "She found Aishwarya hanging from the ceiling fan hook. Both the children were lying dead on the bed," detailed Deputy SP Ravindar.

Authorities confirmed that Aishwarya also left a suicide note, alleging that she resorted to this extreme step due to relentless dowry harassment from her husband and in-laws, adding a poignant layer to the investigation.

Father's Complaint and Legal Action

In his official complaint, Aishwarya's father Yadaiah claimed that a substantial sum of ₹30 lakh was given as dowry at the time of the marriage. He further alleged that his daughter was subjected to continuous harassment for additional dowry, painting a grim picture of the family dynamics.

Based on this complaint, Bibinagar police have registered a case under sections 80 (dowry death) and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused include Yadav, his sisters Anita and Kavita, and his parents Satyamma and Narsimha, indicating a broad scope of alleged involvement.

The bodies were handed over to the family after a thorough postmortem examination, allowing them to perform the last rites amidst immense sorrow. This case underscores the urgent need for societal and legal measures to combat dowry-related crimes and protect vulnerable individuals from such harrowing outcomes.
