DRI Busts Hydroponic Weed Racket, Seizes Rs 7 Crore Drugs

In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a sophisticated syndicate dealing in high-value hybrid cannabis. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 7 kilograms of Thailand-origin hydroponic weed, valued at a staggering Rs 7 crore in the international illicit market.

Coordinated Raids at Major Airports

Acting on specific intelligence about the syndicate using air routes to move narcotics, the Cochin Zonal Unit of DRI launched a coordinated operation spanning multiple locations. Key points of action included the Kochi International Airport and the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, along with certain identified premises in Kochi.

The breakthrough came when DRI officials intercepted a passenger at the Delhi airport. Shortly after, another passenger was intercepted upon arrival at the Kochi airport. These interceptions led to the total seizure of the 7 kg consignment of hydroponic weed, a potent form of cannabis grown using nutrient-rich water instead of soil.

Syndicate Organizers Apprehended and Cash Seized

The operation went beyond mere contraband seizure. The DRI successfully apprehended five individuals believed to be key players in the racket. Among those arrested are one of the key organizers of the syndicate and a coordinator, both hailing from Kerala. An associate from Delhi was also taken into custody.

In a significant find, officials also confiscated unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 34.8 lakh. This money is strongly suspected to be the proceeds from earlier successful drug consignments trafficked by the same network. Preliminary investigations indicate that this syndicate had been actively involved in smuggling narcotics into the country over a period of time.

Major Blow to Drug Trafficking in Kerala

This bust marks another significant achievement for the DRI's Cochin Zonal Unit in the ongoing financial year. The unit has been relentless in its fight against the drug trade, recording seizures of various narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) with a combined value of approximately Rs 47 crore in Kerala alone. These seizures include not just hydroponic weed but also dangerous substances like methamphetamine and cocaine.

In connection with these various seizures throughout the year, a total of 10 individuals have been arrested so far, highlighting the scale of enforcement action. The investigation into the latest hydroponic weed case is still progressing, with officials delving deeper into the syndicate's national and international connections to uncover the entire supply chain.
