Jaipur: A suspected drug smuggler was injured in an exchange of fire with police after allegedly trying to break through a checkpoint in Pali district Wednesday night. Police said two SUVs carrying poppy husk were intercepted after a tip-off. When police set up a barricade, the occupants allegedly accelerated their vehicles, breached the checkpoint and opened fire while fleeing.

During the chase, police retaliated and one of the suspects, Khetaram (35), a resident of Barmer district, sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was admitted to a hospital. No police personnel were injured in the incident. Police have detained another suspect, Bheraram, also from Barmer district, and seized one SUV loaded with doda post.

Police said another SUV carrying contraband managed to escape while its occupants continued firing at the pursuing police team. Authorities are investigating the matter and searching for the escaped vehicle and suspects.
