Drunk Cab Driver Kills Bus Owner in Pune After Honking Dispute Escalates

In a shocking incident that underscores the dangers of road rage and drunk driving, a cab driver in Pune allegedly struck a bus driver with his vehicle, dragged him for approximately 50 meters on the bonnet, and then ran him over after he fell to the ground. The fatal altercation occurred on the Hadapsar-Saswad Road in Uruli Devachi around 12:30 AM on Sunday, following a heated quarrel over repeated honking.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The victim, identified as Sagar Saykar (35), was the owner and driver of a private luxury bus. According to police reports, the suspect, Krushna Gopal Koilwad (30) from Chakur in Latur, was driving an empty cab that was trailing two buses operated by Saykar and his friend, Vijay Shirke (41). The buses were en route from Hadapsar to Wadki Nala to pick up a group of women for a pilgrimage trip to Tuljapur, Akkalkot, and other religious centers.

Senior Inspector Amol More of the Phursungi police provided a detailed account: "The cab driver kept honking incessantly to overtake the buses, but there was insufficient space on the road. Eventually, Saykar and Shirke pulled their buses over to the side in Uruli Devachi, about 20 kilometers from Pune city. The cab driver also stopped behind them."

What followed was a confrontation that turned deadly. Saykar and Shirke exited their buses and approached the cab, knocking on the window to question Koilwad about his aggressive honking. Saykar positioned himself in front of the cab, while Shirke stood near the driver's side window. The exchange quickly escalated into a verbal argument.

Violent Escalation and Fatal Outcome

Inspector More continued: "Without warning, the cab driver accelerated his vehicle, striking Saykar. The impact caused Saykar to jump and land on the cab's bonnet. Koilwad then dragged him for a distance of about 50 meters until Saykar fell onto the road."

In a horrifying turn of events, the cab driver allegedly stopped the vehicle, reversed for a few meters, and then drove forward again, directly over the victim before he could get up. Saykar sustained grievous injuries and succumbed at the scene. His friend, Vijay Shirke, who was trailing in another bus, witnessed the incident and immediately lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Police Action and Legal Charges

The Phursungi police acted swiftly, arresting the cab driver, Krushna Gopal Koilwad, shortly after the incident. Senior Inspector More confirmed that charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder have been invoked against Koilwad. "We are investigating the matter thoroughly, including allegations that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time," he added.

Saykar, a resident of Shewalwadi near Hadapsar, was described as an entrepreneur who operated a travel business with friends. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the perils of road rage and impaired driving.

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of aggressive behavior on roads, urging authorities and citizens alike to prioritize safety and calmness in traffic situations to prevent such avoidable losses of life.
