Drunk Police Officer's Car Kills Woman in Ambala E-Rickshaw Crash on NH-44
A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday night in Ambala, where a 24-year-old woman lost her life after a car, allegedly driven by a drunk police officer, collided with her e-rickshaw on National Highway 44 in the Parao area. The victim, identified as Nikita from Model Town, was traveling towards Ambala City when the fatal crash occurred.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to eyewitness accounts, the e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder Singh, was transporting four passengers from Ambala Cantonment towards the city. As they crossed the Kali Paltan bridge, a speeding Honda City, driven by head constable Amit Kumar, struck the e-rickshaw from behind. Nikita was thrown onto the highway and subsequently crushed by the police officer's vehicle. She was rushed to the civil hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
Ravinder Singh described the scene, stating that the accused officer was heavily intoxicated and could barely stand. He was apprehended by the public with assistance and brought to the hospital for a medical examination.
Family Outrage and Hospital Protests
Family members of the deceased gathered at the civil hospital, expressing their grief and anger over the incident. They protested against the officer and attempted to enter the hospital where Amit Kumar was undergoing medical tests. Extra police personnel were deployed to manage the volatile situation, leading to the forcible closure of the trauma centre's shutter gate. The protests lasted for approximately four hours before the situation was normalized.
Nikita's brother, Mayank, revealed that his elder sister was returning home from her job in Gurugram and had taken the e-rickshaw from Ambala Cantonment bus stand. He condemned the actions of the drunk policeman who caused her death.
Official Statements and Investigation
Dr. DD Pandey, on duty at the civil hospital, confirmed that a female body was received around 9:30 PM. The body has been kept in the mortuary pending further investigation.
Parao SHO Inspector Dharamvir provided an update on the case, stating that a case of causing death by negligence has been registered against head constable Amit Kumar. Blood samples have been collected to determine his level of intoxication. He assured that action will be taken as per the law, with the investigation ongoing.
Post-Mortem and Last Rites
The post-mortem of Nikita was conducted on Thursday, and her body has been handed over to the family for the performance of last rites. The community remains in shock over the preventable tragedy, highlighting concerns over road safety and accountability.
