Drunk Driver's Rampage Injures Six in Trichy, Including Children and Police Constable

A shocking incident of drunk driving unfolded on Vayalur Road in Trichy on Sunday evening, leaving six people injured, including two young children and a police constable. The chaos began when an inebriated driver lost control of his vehicle, setting off a chain of collisions that rattled the local community.

Sequence of Collisions on Vayalur Main Road

Police identified the accused as 49-year-old Kuberan Balaguru, a resident of Vasan Nagar. According to authorities, Kuberan was driving his car from Puthur junction towards Somarasampettai while heavily intoxicated. As he approached the Jeyanthi grocery store on Vayalur Main Road, the situation quickly escalated into a dangerous series of impacts.

  1. Kuberan first collided with a two-wheeler approaching from the opposite direction
  2. He then rammed into a passenger autorickshaw carrying a family
  3. Next, he hit a moped parked on the roadside
  4. Finally, his car came to a halt after crashing into an eatery

Victims and Injuries Sustained in the Accident

The autorickshaw collision proved particularly devastating, injuring four members of a single family. Arun Kumar, 41, from Shanmuga Nagar, was traveling with his wife A Mariammal, 35, and their two young daughters - A Thayani, 6, and A Sivanya, just 2 years old. All four sustained injuries in the violent impact.

Medical authorities confirmed that Arun Kumar required admission to a private hospital due to the severity of his injuries. His wife and two daughters, along with autorickshaw driver M Veeramani, 25, were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (MGMGH) for treatment.

In a separate but connected incident, police constable G Ragunathan from Woraiyur suffered a leg fracture when he was struck by Kuberan's car during the initial phase of the rampage. The officer was among the first victims of the drunk driver's reckless behavior.

Public Outrage and Police Response

Eyewitnesses reported that locals became enraged upon realizing Kuberan was intoxicated during the incident. In a spontaneous display of public anger, residents manhandled the accused driver before police could intervene. Law enforcement officers rushed to the scene and rescued Kuberan from the agitated crowd.

Police have registered a formal case against Kuberan Balaguru and seized his vehicle as part of their investigation. The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and the dangers of drunk driving in the Trichy region.

This disturbing event serves as a stark reminder of the potentially catastrophic consequences of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Local authorities are expected to review safety measures along Vayalur Road in response to this incident.
