A drunk man on Wednesday night struck five people with his friend's car at a vegetable market in Balajinagar, off Pune-Satara Road, after being asked to park the vehicle. The driver, identified as Akbar Tamboli (30), did not possess a driving license.
Arrest and Investigation
Senior Inspector Vitthal Pawar of the Sahakarnagar police station stated, "We arrested the driver, Akbar Tamboli, on Thursday morning after registering a case against him. His medical test confirmed that he was drunk."
Pawar added, "Tamboli does not know how to drive a car. We will question the owner of the vehicle, a friend of Tamboli."
Victims and Injuries
A 17-year-old girl who was injured lodged a complaint with the police. "Out of the five injured people, one girl is in a serious condition and has been admitted to a private hospital in Dhankawdi. The others have been discharged," Pawar said.
Tamboli, a vegetable vendor, owns a stall at the market. The incident occurred around 9 pm when another stall owner asked him to park the car on the other side of the market. "Tamboli, who was intoxicated, got into the driver's seat and started the car. As soon as he pressed the accelerator, he lost control and it hit the five people," Pawar explained.
Additional Incident: Bus Hits Scooter
In a separate incident, two women riding a scooter were injured after a private luxury bus hit them from behind at Puram Chowk on Bajirao Road around 6:30 am on Thursday. Senior Inspector Yashwant Nikam of the Swargate police said, "The bus was heading towards Shivajinagar from Sarasbaug. Its driver jumped the red signal at the chowk and hit the scooter riders from behind. He then lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into the railings of the footpath and came to a halt on the pavement."
