DSP attacked in Dantewada, accused from Durg held

In a shocking incident that unfolded in broad daylight, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (SDOP) from Chhattisgarh's Sukma district was brutally attacked with a knife in the bustling town of Dantewada, located in the Bastar region. The assault left the officer injured and caused panic in a busy market area.

Daylight Assault Near District Court

The attack targeted SDOP (Jagargunda) Tomesh Verma on Friday. According to official statements, the incident occurred in the market area close to the district court premises. Verma had travelled to Dantewada in connection with a court case.

As per details provided by Dantewada SP Gaurav Rai, a man and a woman who had come from Durg district approached the officer to discuss an old case. This case is said to be pending in a court in Durg. The conversation, however, took a violent turn when an argument erupted between Verma and the man.

Argument Turns Violent, Officer Injured

During the heated argument, the man allegedly pulled out a knife and assaulted the police officer. Verma sustained serious injuries on his head and near the neck from the stabbing. He was immediately rushed to the Dantewada district hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Police officials have confirmed that after receiving care, the officer's condition is now stated to be out of danger. He is currently undergoing further treatment at the hospital.

Accused Overpowered, Motive Probed

The sudden attack caused alarm among people in the crowded market zone. However, police personnel present in the vicinity acted swiftly. They managed to overpower the attacker and bring the situation under control promptly.

The Dantewada police have taken both individuals into custody. The main accused has been identified as Ravishankar Sahu, a resident of Durg. The woman accompanying him is named Ranjita Verma. Both are being questioned intensively by the investigating teams.

Preliminary investigations point towards a possible link to an old case involving the accused in Durg. Officials indicated that the matter for which SDOP Verma had come for court work could be connected to a UAPA-related case. A senior officer stated that a detailed investigation is in progress and all angles are being thoroughly examined.

As a precautionary measure following the incident, additional police force has been deployed in the area. Authorities have assured the public that the overall situation remains under control.
