The estranged husband of Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at Delhi University who was found murdered in her apartment, has told police that he was in Pune at the time of the crime. According to sources, the angle of a revenge killing and the possible involvement of contract killers are also being investigated.
Husband's Statement Being Verified
Sources said that the estranged husband's statement has been recorded, and his claims are currently being verified by the police. Investigators are checking his alibi and other details.
Two More Unidentified Persons on CCTV
Police have identified two additional unidentified individuals on CCTV footage from the residential complex in Vasundhara Enclave, east Delhi. These men entered the complex between 1 pm and 6 pm on Wednesday, the timeframe during which the murder is believed to have occurred. They arrived in a cab but were not recorded in the visitors' register maintained by security guards, sources revealed.
This development comes a day after police began tracing a masked man and woman who were also seen entering the complex around the same time.
13 Individuals Under Scrutiny
Investigators had narrowed down to 13 people whose movements inside the society during the relevant period required verification. Of these, nine have been identified and cleared, while four remain unidentified: the two men from the latest CCTV footage and the masked couple.
Guards told investigators that, aside from delivery personnel, visitors were often allowed entry without proper verification. Regarding the masked duo, guards said the man walked ahead and the woman followed, asking for directions to certain flats, but the guards could not recall the specific flat numbers.
Laptop Found Open
Investigators are also examining Paul's laptop, which was found open inside her apartment. An officer said, "She may have been preparing material related to an educational programme before the device went into sleep mode."
