ED Raids in Punjab and UP Target Human Trafficking, Cyber Fraud Syndicate
ED Raids in Punjab, UP Against Trafficking Syndicate

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at multiple locations in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday as part of an investigation into a trafficking syndicate linked to Cambodia. The syndicate is suspected to be involved in organized human trafficking, cyber fraud, and the laundering of proceeds of crime generated through these illegal activities.

Raids and Investigation

The searches were carried out under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED team, accompanied by local police, raided premises in several districts of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Officials stated that the operation is based on intelligence inputs regarding a network that lured Indian nationals with false promises of employment in Cambodia and then forced them into cyber fraud operations.

Modus Operandi

According to the ED, the syndicate used fake recruitment agencies to target vulnerable individuals, particularly from rural areas. Victims were promised high-paying jobs in Cambodia but were instead coerced into carrying out cyber fraud activities, including phishing and online scams. The money earned from these crimes was then laundered through a complex web of shell companies and bank accounts.

Earlier Cases

This is not the first such case. Earlier this year, the Delhi Police had filed a First Information Report (FIR) related to a similar overseas employment scam. The ED had taken over the investigation in that case as well. The agency has been coordinating with Cambodian authorities to track down the kingpins of the syndicate.

Government Response

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued advisories cautioning Indian citizens against accepting job offers from unverified agents. The government has also set up a task force to tackle the issue of human trafficking and cyber fraud originating from Southeast Asia.

The ED's investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days. The agency has urged anyone with information about such syndicates to come forward and assist in the probe.
