Elderly Couple Burned in LPG Fire in Chennai

Chennai: An elderly couple sustained severe burn injuries when a domestic LPG gas cylinder caught fire inside their residence in Pulianthope on Tuesday night. The victims, Devaraj (74), a retired sanitary worker from the Chennai Corporation, and his wife Muniyammal (70), a domestic helper, were admitted to KMC Hospital for treatment.

Incident Details

Police reported that the couple lived alone at their home on Kanniga Puram in Pulianthope. The accident occurred when Muniyammal opened the cooking gas cylinder and left it open for a while. Upon attempting to light the stove, the accumulated gas ignited, triggering a fire.

Rapid Spread of Flames

The flames spread quickly, engulfing both Muniyammal and Devaraj. Hearing their cries for help, neighbours rushed to the scene, extinguished the fire, and transported the couple to KMC Hospital.

Medical Condition: Muniyammal suffered 80% burn injuries and has been admitted to the intensive care unit, while Devaraj sustained 65% burn injuries.

Investigation Underway

Pulianthope police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the fire accident. Authorities are examining the circumstances leading to the gas leak and subsequent ignition.

This incident highlights the critical importance of handling LPG cylinders with caution, especially in households with elderly individuals. Proper ventilation and immediate attention to gas leaks can prevent such tragedies.
