In a disturbing incident that highlights the persistence of superstitious beliefs in rural India, a 65-year-old man was brutally assaulted in Jharkhand's Chatra district after being accused of practising witchcraft.
The victim, identified as Bigan Soren, was allegedly set upon by a group of villagers in Kheshgiya village under Itkhori police station limits. The attackers mercilessly thrashed the elderly man, leaving him with severe injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Violent Attack in Broad Daylight
According to police reports, the assault occurred when local villagers collectively targeted Soren, holding him responsible for various misfortunes in the community through alleged witchcraft practices. The mob showed no mercy to the senior citizen, beating him severely before authorities could intervene.
"The victim has been admitted to Chatra sadar hospital where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries," confirmed a police official from Itkhori police station.
Police Launch Investigation
Law enforcement authorities have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. "We are looking into all aspects of the case and appropriate legal action will be taken against the perpetrators," the investigating officer stated.
This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenge of combating superstitious practices in certain regions, where elderly individuals often become targets of community anger based on unsubstantiated allegations of witchcraft.
Pattern of Witchcraft-Related Violence
Jharkhand has witnessed several similar incidents in recent years where individuals, particularly from tribal communities, have been attacked or even killed after being branded as witches. Despite awareness campaigns and legal provisions, such superstitious beliefs continue to claim victims across the state.
The condition of the assaulted elderly man remains a matter of concern as medical professionals monitor his recovery at the district hospital.
