Bengaluru: What seemed like a kind gesture from a stranger on a rainy evening turned into an expensive lesson for a 78-year-old man, who was tricked into parting with his gold ring worth over Rs 50,000.
Incident Details
K Sathyanarayana Rao told police the incident occurred on June 8 at 7.15 pm. Rao had gone for his evening walk and stopped near a vegetable shop on Muddinapalya Main Road, west Bengaluru. As rain intensified, he decided to return home without making any purchases.
An unidentified man with a child on a two-wheeler approached him and offered him a lift, saying he was traveling in the same direction towards Solapuradamma Temple. Initially declining the offer, the elderly man eventually agreed.
The Deception
The stranger dropped Rao on the road leading to the temple. He pretended to notice the gold ring on Rao’s finger and expressed interest in getting a similar design. On the pretext of examining it, he took the ring and sped away on his scooter.
Safety Advisory
Citizens are advised to remain cautious of such deceptive tactics. Always verify the identity of strangers offering assistance and avoid handing over valuable items to unknown individuals.
