Elderly Woman Targeted During Wedding Celebration
In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about public safety, an 85-year-old woman became the victim of a daring daylight robbery outside a prominent hotel in Ludhiana. The elderly woman, identified as Ramila Mehra, was attending her nephew's wedding ceremony when criminals targeted her for her valuable gold jewelry.
The Brazen Snatching Incident
The crime occurred on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road when Ramila Mehra was standing outside the hotel entrance with other wedding guests. According to the police complaint filed by Vikram Mehra, a resident of Daad village, a man suddenly approached the elderly woman from behind and snatched her 150gm gold necklace before making a quick escape.
Eyewitnesses and hotel staff immediately attempted to chase the perpetrator, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. The entire sequence of events was captured by the hotel's surveillance system, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Well-Planned Escape
CCTV footage reviewed by authorities revealed that the snatching was part of a carefully coordinated operation. Another accomplice was waiting on a motorcycle at a short distance from the crime scene. As soon as the primary accused secured the necklace, he sprinted toward the waiting bike, and both men fled before anyone could intercept them.
Family members were seen in the video footage running after the criminals, but the well-rehearsed escape plan allowed the duo to disappear from the scene without being apprehended.
Police Response and Investigation
The Sarahba Nagar police station has registered a formal case against the unidentified accused. ASI Harbhol Singh, the investigating officer on the case, confirmed that an FIR has been lodged under Section 304(2) of the BNS pertaining to snatching offenses.
While the CCTV cameras captured the escape route of the accused, the footage did not clearly show their faces, complicating identification efforts. Police authorities are currently examining additional surveillance cameras installed in the surrounding area to gather more evidence and identify the perpetrators.
This incident has highlighted growing concerns about street crimes targeting elderly citizens in public spaces, particularly during crowded events where criminals can easily blend in and escape.
