Hyderabad Engineer Arrested in Bhubaneswar for Alleged Rape and Religious Coercion
In a disturbing case of deception and violence, Saheed Nagar police in Bhubaneswar have arrested a 33-year-old civil engineer from Hyderabad for allegedly raping his girlfriend and attempting to force her to convert her religion under the false pretext of marriage. The arrest occurred on Sunday following a formal complaint filed by the 22-year-old survivor, who works at a local hotel.
Deceptive Relationship and Violent Assault
The accused, originally from Bidar in Karnataka, reportedly befriended the woman about a year ago through a mutual friend. He allegedly concealed his true identity by posing as "Jayram Sharma," presenting himself as a Hindu to gain her trust. According to police reports, the relationship developed under the understanding that it would lead to marriage.
The situation escalated dramatically last week when the man traveled to Bhubaneswar specifically to meet the woman. During their encounter, he allegedly raped her and then pressured her to accompany him to Hyderabad. It was at this point that he revealed his actual identity and insisted she change her religion to align with his own minority community background.
Resistance Leads to Further Violence and Police Intervention
When the woman firmly refused to convert her religion, the situation turned even more violent. The accused allegedly assaulted her again and attempted to forcibly abduct her. This series of traumatic events prompted the survivor to file an official police complaint on Saturday, leading to the swift arrest of the Hyderabad-based engineer the following day.
"The rape survivor is a Hindu, while the accused is from a minority community," explained an officer from Saheed Nagar police station. "As per her complaint, he concealed his identity and introduced himself as a Hindu to gain her trust under the pretext of marriage. A case has been registered against him under charges of rape, criminal conspiracy, and kidnapping."
Conflicting Accounts and Legal Proceedings
During police interrogation, the arrested engineer presented a completely different version of events. He denied all allegations of rape and forced religious conversion, claiming instead that the woman was fully aware of his true identity from the beginning. The accused further alleged that the woman fabricated the charges against him after he discovered she was involved in another romantic relationship.
Despite these contradictory claims, police have proceeded with the case based on the survivor's detailed complaint and supporting evidence. The investigation continues as authorities work to establish the complete timeline of events and verify the conflicting accounts presented by both parties.
This case highlights serious concerns about deceptive relationships, religious coercion, and gender-based violence in contemporary society. The Bhubaneswar police have emphasized their commitment to thoroughly investigating all aspects of the complaint while ensuring proper legal procedures are followed throughout the judicial process.
