According to investigation officers, the incident unfolded when K Rani, a 45-year-old Dalit woman from Perundurai, approached C Ravi, the 45-year-old owner of a small marriage hall near Anna Silai. In the last week of February, Rani sought to book the hall for her younger son's wedding reception. Ravi initially confirmed the hall's availability and agreed to rent it to her.
The situation took a discriminatory turn on March 3, when Rani visited the marriage hall's office to hand over an advance payment for the booking. At this meeting, Ravi inquired about her caste. Upon learning that she belonged to the Dalit community, he abruptly refused to allocate the hall for the event, effectively denying service based solely on caste identity.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Following this blatant act of discrimination, Rani lodged a formal complaint with the Perundurai police on the same evening. The police acted swiftly, registering a case against Ravi under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which is designed to protect marginalized communities from such atrocities.
During the subsequent interrogation, Ravi experienced a medical emergency, suffering from high blood pressure and falling sick. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Perundurai for treatment. Investigation officers confirmed that Ravi remains admitted to the hospital, and he will be formally arrested once his medical condition stabilizes and improves sufficiently.
