Inmate Flees Thrissur Mental Health Facility, Attacks Three in Early Morning Stabbing Spree
In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about security at mental health institutions, an inmate escaped from the Thrissur government mental health centre and went on a stabbing rampage in nearby areas during the early hours of Saturday. The accused, identified as Suraj, a 31-year-old from Nepal, was eventually subdued by vigilant residents and handed over to the police, but not before inflicting injuries on three individuals.
Details of the Attack and Injuries Sustained
One of the victims, Villadath Veettil Murali, a 64-year-old resident of Kamath Lane in Kottappuram, suffered severe abdominal injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery at a private hospital in the city. Murali was stabbed when he bravely attempted to prevent Suraj from entering his premises. The other two victims sustained only minor injuries in the attack, which occurred as Suraj roamed the area after his escape.
Escape and Prior Police Involvement
Suraj had been brought to the Thrissur mental health centre earlier on Saturday after police in Ernakulam observed him moving in a suspicious manner in Aluva. However, in a lapse of security, he managed to escape within just one hour of his admission. Reports indicate that he fled through a pathway located near the toilet, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in the facility's infrastructure and monitoring systems.
Legal and Judicial Response to the Incident
In response to this alarming event, Kerala High Court judge Justice Devan Ramachandran has taken swift action by seeking a detailed report on the incident from the amicus curiae appointed to oversee matters related to mental health care. The High Court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday, underscoring the urgency of addressing safety protocols and patient management in such institutions to prevent future occurrences.
This incident has sparked discussions about the need for enhanced security measures and better oversight in mental health centres across the region, ensuring the safety of both patients and the public.
