In a dramatic conclusion to a brutal crime, Delhi Police have arrested a former family caretaker from Rajasthan in connection with the murder of an elderly couple in Shahdara, East Delhi. The arrest followed an intense interstate manhunt covering over 500 kilometres.
The Grisly Discovery and the Manhunt
The case came to light when Vaibhav (28) found his parents, Virender Kumar Bansal (75) and Parvesh Bansal (65), dead in their home in Mansarovar Park's Ram Nagar Extension around midnight on Saturday. Virender was a retired teacher. Police investigation revealed the couple had employed two caretakers to assist them with their ailments.
As reported earlier, the accused was identified as Ashok Kumar Sen, a resident of Laxmi Park in Delhi's Nangloi area. A massive search operation was launched to track him down. Joint Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma confirmed that Sen was finally apprehended from Tapiplya village in Rajasthan's Sikar district.
How the Net Closed In on the Accused
The investigation took a crucial turn when police contacted Sen's wife. "She informed officers that he had gone on a pilgrimage without his mobile phone, which immediately raised suspicion," a senior officer stated. A police team promptly visited Sen's Nangloi residence.
There, they found that his photograph matched the physical build of a suspect seen in crucial CCTV footage from the area. Technical surveillance and analysis later pinpointed his location to Sikar, Rajasthan, leading to the formation of a special team for his capture.
Motive and Modus Operandi Revealed
During interrogation, Sen confessed to the crime, outlining a premeditated plan. Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma detailed the sequence of events. Sen, who had previously worked as the couple's caretaker, was aware that Parvesh Bansal regularly wore gold jewellery.
"To make quick money, he hatched a conspiracy to rob them," stated DCP Verma. In preparation, Sen shifted his residence before the incident. He meticulously planned his movement through blind spots to avoid detection. Exploiting the absence of the couple's son and his own familiarity as a former employee, he gained entry into the house.
After robbing the gold jewellery, he murdered the elderly couple and fled to Rajasthan. In a calculated move to evade police tracking, he deliberately did not carry any mobile phone.
Following his arrest, police successfully recovered the stolen gold jewellery, which included items of high sentimental and monetary value: a chain, a mangalsutra, two kangans (bangles), a ring, and a locket.
Ongoing Investigation and Implications
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in this shocking case that has gripped the national capital region. Police have stated that further investigation is underway to explore all angles and ensure a watertight case is presented in court. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of elderly citizens and the verification of domestic help.
