A special CBI court in Ranchi on Tuesday sentenced Mohammad Mahfooz Alam, a former clerk of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The convict, while posted at the CCL Barka Sayal area, had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the widow of a former CCL employee to process her payment of leave encashment.
Following a complaint filed by the widow's brother, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) laid a trap and caught Alam red-handed while accepting the bribe. The court found him guilty of corruption and sentenced him accordingly. The fine amount is to be paid as part of the punishment.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat corruption in public sector undertakings. The CBI's swift action in apprehending the accused and securing a conviction serves as a deterrent to others who may engage in similar malpractices.
