Ahmedabad: Former Mayor's Nephew Detained in Drunk Driving Case

In a late-night incident in Ahmedabad, a 39-year-old man was detained by traffic police for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. The event occurred near the Rambaug crossroads in the Maninagar area, where local residents intervened following a minor collision.

Details of the Incident

According to senior police sources, the accused, Vishal Gurjar (39), a resident of Khokhra, is the nephew of former Congress MLA and ex-Ahmedabad mayor Himmatsinh Patel. The J Division traffic police control room received a message around 11:45 PM on March 1, reporting that a man driving in an inebriated condition had been apprehended by members of the public near the BRTS bus stand at Rambaug.

A night patrol team promptly arrived at the scene and discovered a white car stationed on the road. Police stated that the car had allegedly brushed against another four-wheeler, resulting in minor scratches. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the other vehicle departed from the location.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Upon questioning, the driver appeared unsteady and struggled to maintain his balance. Officers conducted a preliminary check in the presence of panch witnesses and noted a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. When requested to produce a liquor permit, Gurjar allegedly informed the police that he did not possess one.

The vehicle, valued at approximately Rs 10 lakh, was seized for further investigation. A case has been registered against Gurjar under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving and Section 66(1)(B) of the Prohibition Act. A traffic officer involved in the probe confirmed, "There was no casualty in the incident. Further legal action will follow as per procedure."

Increased Police Vigilance

In response to such incidents, police have intensified routine night patrolling across Ahmedabad to curb drunk driving. This measure aims to enhance road safety and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
