Former Pune Traffic Warden Arrested in Chain Snatching and Vehicle Theft Cases
The Wakad police in Pune have made a significant arrest, apprehending a former traffic warden from the Chatushrungi traffic division. The individual, identified as Sachin Chavan, aged 27 and a resident of Maan village, is implicated in a series of chain snatching incidents and vehicle thefts that have unsettled the local community.
Background and Initial Crimes
Sachin Chavan was removed from his position as a traffic warden approximately five months ago due to inappropriate behavior. Following his dismissal, he allegedly turned to criminal activities, beginning with chain snatching. His first reported offense involved snatching a gold chain valued at Rs 1.50 lakh from a 42-year-old man in the Wakad area.
On April 8, Chavan escalated his crimes by targeting a 32-year-old woman in Thergaon, making off with a gold chain worth Rs 1 lakh. The victim provided crucial details in her complaint, noting that the perpetrator fled the scene on a distinctive white and purple-colored scooter. This description became a key lead for the investigating team.
Police Investigation and Arrest
A dedicated police team from Wakad, under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Ashok Kadlag, launched a thorough investigation. They meticulously reviewed multiple CCTV footage recordings from the areas surrounding the crime scenes. Their efforts paid off when they successfully traced the scooter and located the accused at his residence in Maan village on April 10.
During intensive questioning, Chavan confessed to his involvement in the two chain snatching cases. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-II) Vishal Gaikwad stated, "Chavan admitted to robbing two gold chains and stealing the scooter used in the crimes." This confession provided critical evidence linking him directly to the offenses.
Pattern of Criminal Activity
Further investigation revealed a pattern in Chavan's criminal behavior. In February, he used a motorcycle to commit a chain snatching. By March, he had stolen a scooter that was previously detained by the Chatushrungi traffic division. He then utilized this stolen vehicle to carry out the chain snatching on April 8, demonstrating a calculated approach to his crimes.
The police have connected Chavan to a total of three cases: two chain snatching incidents registered with the Wakad police and one vehicle theft case filed with the Chatushrungi police. Authorities have emphasized that their investigations are ongoing, as they work to uncover any additional crimes or accomplices involved.
