Family Slain in Jharkhand Village Over Witchcraft Accusations
In a shocking incident in Danga village of Godda district, Jharkhand, a couple and their minor son were brutally murdered on Monday night. Police have confirmed that the killings were carried out by extended family members who suspected the victims of practising witchcraft.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Godda, Ashok Priyadarshi, stated on Wednesday that three accused individuals were arrested on Tuesday and have confessed to the crime. According to Priyadarshi, three more suspects are currently on the run, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to delve deeper into the case.
The victims have been identified as Darbari Murmu, aged 50, his wife Makku Baski, aged 45, and their 12-year-old son Jeetnarayan Murmu. They were attacked with sharp-edged weapons and hacked to death in their home.
Motive Rooted in Revenge
The police investigation has revealed that the motive behind the murders traces back to a tragic event from eight years ago. The accused family members blamed the couple for the death of a relative, alleging that they used black magic or witchcraft to cause the fatality. This long-held grudge culminated in the violent act of revenge.
"The three accused killed the family as they held them responsible for the relative's death, claiming it was due to witchcraft practices," explained SDPO Priyadarshi. The case highlights the persistent superstitions and tribal issues in the Santhal Parganas region, which encompasses six districts in Jharkhand.
