KRISHNAGIRI: A farmer set himself on fire at the Krishnagiri district collectorate on Monday, expressing frustration over the lack of action by officials regarding his complaint about a land dispute. The farmer, identified as M Venkatesan, 46, from Matharsanapalli village near Shoolagiri, had filed a petition with the Krishnagiri district collector's office in 2025, seeking a survey of 20 cents of his land.

Background of the Dispute

According to officials, Naveen and Sidhan, sons of Thimmaiah, have allegedly usurped Venkatesan's piece of land. Their henchmen had reportedly assaulted him and threatened to kill him, exacerbating his distress.

Incident Details

On Monday, Venkatesan filed another petition at the district collector's office. After submitting the petition, he suddenly poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze, as per an officer at the Krishnagiri taluk station. Police and firefighters on security duty immediately extinguished the flames. Venkatesan was rushed to Krishnagiri Government Medical College and Hospital in an ambulance, where doctors confirmed he had sustained 60% burn injuries.

The Krishnagiri taluk police have registered a case in connection with the incident. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading to the extreme step.
