A father and his son were rescued from a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Kolkata on Tuesday after being allegedly kidnapped for ransom. The family had received a phone call demanding Rs 5 lakh for their release.
Rescue Operation Details
According to police sources, the two were found locked inside a room at the BJP's district office in the Burrabazar area. The rescue operation was conducted after the family filed a complaint. The victims, identified as Sushil Agarwal (45) and his son Rohan (18), were reportedly abducted on Monday evening from near their residence in central Kolkata.
“We received a call around 9 pm demanding Rs 5 lakh. We immediately informed the police,” said a family member, requesting anonymity.
BJP Denies Involvement
The BJP has categorically denied any link to the kidnapping. Party spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “This is a conspiracy to defame the party. The office was being used by some miscreants without our knowledge. We are cooperating with the investigation.”
However, local residents claimed that the office had been locked for months and was rarely used. Police are investigating whether the kidnappers had unauthorized access to the premises.
Investigation Underway
“We have rescued the victims and arrested two suspects who were present at the office. They are being interrogated,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Suvankar Ghosh. The accused have been identified as Pankaj Singh and Raju Sharma, both in their late 20s.
The victims have been sent for medical examination and are in stable condition. The ransom call was traced to a mobile phone found at the scene. Police are probing if the suspects had any political connections.
