Kolhapur Horror: Father Hangs Daughters Upside Down for 14 Hours, 9-Year-Old Dies
A shocking incident of alleged child torture has emerged from Sangli district in Maharashtra, where a 35-year-old father is accused of hanging his two young daughters upside down from a metal bar for 14 hours, leading to the death of his 9-year-old daughter and leaving his 11-year-old daughter in serious condition.
Details of the Alleged Torture
The incident occurred in Banpuri village of Atpadi tehsil in Sangli district. According to police officials, the man allegedly began the torture around 5 PM on Wednesday evening and continued until 7 AM on Thursday morning. The girls were reportedly hung upside down from the roof of their tin-shed house while their father kept watch with a koyta (a sharp-edged agricultural tool) in hand.
Vipul Patil, the sub-divisional police officer of Vita division, stated: "The accused threatened his wife and father that he would kill them too if they intervened to release the girls." The man reportedly took this extreme action to punish his daughters after his uncle complained that the girls had stolen money from his house.
Medical Emergency and Police Response
When both girls fell unconscious after hours of hanging upside down, family members and neighbors rushed them to a local hospital. The 9-year-old girl died while being transported to Pandharpur for advanced medical treatment. Her 11-year-old sister remained unconscious and required surgery, after which she was shifted to a hospital in Sangli for further care.
Police arrested the 35-year-old man on Thursday under sections 103 and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and attempt to murder. Vinay Bahir, assistant inspector of Atpadi police station, confirmed that the process of filing a formal complaint was underway and the FIR would be registered shortly.
Family Background and Investigation
The police revealed that the accused is a farmer who also trades livestock. He has five children total—four daughters and one son. The two girls subjected to this brutal punishment were his third and fourth children.
Regarding the alleged theft that triggered the incident, police said the girls had reportedly stolen money to spend at a village fair. This led to a dispute between the two families before the father took matters into his own hands with the extreme punishment.
Ongoing Investigation
While the postmortem examination of the deceased 9-year-old has been completed, authorities are awaiting clinical analysis and histopathology reports to determine the exact cause of death. Vipul Patil emphasized that only after receiving these reports could investigators conclusively establish the medical factors contributing to the tragedy.
This case has sent shockwaves through the local community and highlights serious concerns about child protection and domestic violence in rural areas. The police investigation continues as they gather additional evidence and statements from family members and witnesses.
