Father of Teen SUV Driver Apologizes, Victim's Mother Rejects Gesture

In a tragic turn of events following a fatal SUV crash in Delhi's Dwarka area, the father of the 17-year-old accused has issued a public apology to the mother of the deceased victim. However, the grieving mother has firmly rejected the gesture, expressing frustration over the delayed outreach and perceived insincerity.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The accident occurred on February 3 in the Dwarka locality when a speeding SUV, driven by the teenage boy who was reportedly filming a video for social media at the time, collided with a motorcycle and a taxi. The impact resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man named Sahil and left a cab driver critically injured. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and legal scrutiny.

Father's Apology and Statement

The accused's father, speaking to news agency PTI, expressed deep remorse for the loss of life. He stated that he was away in Gorakhpur on business when the accident happened and returned to Delhi immediately upon receiving the news. "I sincerely apologise to the mother who lost her son. I am ready to seek her forgiveness and will follow whatever decision the law and judiciary make," he said. He emphasized his understanding of the bereaved family's pain as a parent himself and vowed to abide by judicial outcomes.

Victim's Mother's Response

Sahil's mother, Inna Makan, a single parent, responded with skepticism and anger. She highlighted that the apology came 15 days after the accident, with no prior personal effort from the accused's family to contact her. "After 15 days, he suddenly remembers he is a parent. It's almost ironic. The police haven't even apprehended the father of the accused, who was only focused on securing bail for his son," she alleged. Makan claimed that neither the police nor the accused's family had reached out to her personally, suggesting they underestimated her determination to pursue the case despite financial constraints.

Legal and Investigative Developments

Delhi Police has taken action by booking the father under the Motor Vehicle Act for allowing a minor to drive. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh confirmed that the accused initially misrepresented his age as 19, but document verification proved he is a minor. "His father was bound down and will be charge-sheeted for allowing the minor to drive a vehicle. Further investigation is underway," the officer stated. A fresh video of the accident aftermath surfaced on social media, showing the victim on the road and the SUV at the crash site, with locals intervening.

Broader Implications and Reactions

The father of the accused maintained that his commercial vehicles are managed transparently by drivers and managers, describing the incident as a "big mistake" by his son that will not recur. However, Makan's rejection of the apology underscores ongoing tensions, as she feels the family's focus has been on legal defense rather than genuine remorse. This case highlights issues of accountability, parental responsibility, and the emotional toll on victims' families in such tragedies.
