FBI Charges Punjab Police SHO with Extortion

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has charged Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, with involvement in a $400,000 extortion case. The FBI alleges that the officer attempted to implicate a US-based family in a false murder case in India. Details of the case have been released on the FBI's official website, along with a video statement.

Immediate Action by Punjab Police

Upon learning of the charges from the FBI's Los Angeles webpage, DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla ordered the transfer of Nagra to Police Lines. To ensure a fair investigation, the inquiry has been assigned to an officer outside Hoshiarpur. SP (D) Jalandhar Vineet Ahlawat has been tasked with investigating the matter and submitting a report to the department promptly.

Political Reactions

Reacting to the development, SAD leader Bikram Majithia expressed concern on X, stating, "Just as the FBI sought the extradition of Goldy Brar, Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, a Punjab Police officer has now also come under the FBI's scanner. The Punjab Police, once known for its reputation, has today become a symbol of global embarrassment." Congress Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira remarked, "The filing of chargesheet against a Punjab Police officer for extortion of US $4,00,000 has come as a big blot and question mark on the functioning of Punjab Police."
