Ferozepur Courts Evacuated Following Bomb Threat Email, Second Hoax in Two Months
A bomb threat email triggered the immediate evacuation of the Ferozepur district courts complex on Monday, marking the second such hoax incident in the district within the past two months. This alarming event prompted a full-scale security sweep and raised serious concerns about the misuse of digital platforms for creating panic.
Immediate Evacuation and Security Response
The threat was received on the official email address of the court complex, leading police to swiftly evacuate the premises as a precautionary measure. Judges, court staff, lawyers, and litigants were all instructed to vacate the complex, while authorities sealed all entry and exit points to ensure safety.
Bomb disposal squads and dog squads were immediately deployed to conduct a meticulous search of the entire premises. No suspicious objects were found during the operation, confirming the threat as a hoax. Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu stated that the threat was taken with utmost seriousness, resulting in the prompt clearing of the court complex.
"A detailed search of the entire court complex was carried out. We are also investigating the origin and sender of the email," Sidhu emphasized, highlighting the ongoing efforts to trace the perpetrators.
History of Similar Incidents and Investigation Challenges
Sidhu revealed that a similar bomb threat email had been received approximately two months ago, which also turned out to be a hoax. This recurrence underscores a troubling pattern of false alarms disrupting public safety and judicial operations. "Tracing such emails can sometimes be challenging, but efforts are underway to identify those responsible," he added, noting the complexities involved in cyber investigations.
Police confirmed that further investigation is in progress, with cyber experts being roped in to assist. The incident has drawn attention to the need for robust digital forensics in handling such threats.
Government Response and Enhanced Cyber Security Measures
Reacting to the series of threat emails, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserted that the government is not taking such messages "lightly". He detailed coordinated efforts to trace IP addresses and collaborate with central agencies, especially in cases with potential foreign links.
Mann pointed out that similar rumors have surfaced in places like Haryana and even the Supreme Court, but assured that Punjab Police has strengthened its cyber response capabilities. "The Punjab Police is being updated and cyber experts have been hired to deal with the challenge of criminals using advanced technology. The state police is working with the BSF and central agencies," Mann stated, emphasizing a proactive approach to combat such digital threats.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of hoax bomb threats via email, necessitating enhanced vigilance and technological upgrades in law enforcement to protect public institutions and maintain order.
