FIR Against Cops for Dead Man's Statement in Murder Case

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two police officers for allegedly submitting the 'statement' of a deceased individual in connection with the murder of a US-based woman in Ludhiana. The accused officers are former Dehlon Station House Officer (SHO) Sukhjinder Singh and head constable Sanjiv Kumar. They have been charged with evidence tampering, distorting official records, and fabricating documents.

Background of the Case

Rupinder Kaur, a 72-year-old US-based woman, was murdered in July 2025. Following the incident, police arrested the house owner, Sukhjit Singh, while his brother Manvir remains missing. According to police, Sukhjit confessed to murdering Rupinder at the behest of a UK-based Non-Resident Indian (NRI), who was accused of duping the victim.

Allegations of Fabrication

Manvir, the missing brother, approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking anticipatory bail. In his petition, he alleged that a witness statement in the police file had been fabricated. Specifically, the statement of Gurpreet Singh was recorded as a witness on September 19, 2025. However, Manvir's plea highlighted that Gurpreet Singh had actually died on May 29, 2025, nearly four months before his purported statement was taken.
