In a significant crackdown on illegal arms, the Amritsar police arrested five individuals and recovered a cache of illegal weapons from their possession. The operation was conducted late Tuesday night in the outskirts of the city, following a tip-off about the movement of suspected criminals.
The Arrests and Seizures
The police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gurpreet Singh, intercepted a vehicle near the Chheharta area. Upon searching the vehicle, the officers found three pistols, several magazines, and a large quantity of live cartridges. The five accused, identified as residents of different parts of Amritsar, were taken into custody immediately.
According to DSP Singh, the suspects were planning to commit a crime in the city, and the timely action prevented a potential incident. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are now investigating the source of the weapons and trying to establish if the accused have any links to larger criminal networks. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the weapons were procured from across the border, and further interrogation is expected to reveal more details.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar, Satinder Singh, praised the team for their swift action and reiterated the police department's commitment to making Amritsar a safe city. He urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the police helpline.
