Five Family Members Killed in Gwalior as Speeding SUV Rams Auto-Rickshaw
A devastating road accident in Gwalior has resulted in the tragic deaths of five members of a single family, with four others sustaining serious injuries, including two young children. The horrific incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning when a speeding SUV, allegedly attempting to evade police pursuit, violently collided with an overloaded auto-rickshaw.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
According to Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Yadav, the catastrophic chain of events began around 3 AM near the Gwalior bus stand. The SUV, which had reportedly been involved in a separate collision shortly before, was being actively followed by a Dial 100 police response team. "It appears the driver was overspeeding to escape police in connection with the earlier accident," SP Yadav explained to media sources. "The SUV hit the auto from behind with tremendous force. The auto, which was overloaded, then crashed into a roadside neem tree. Five people died in the accident."
The family had been returning from prayers at the Sheetla Mata temple when their journey ended in tragedy. The impact of the collision was so severe that it flung the auto-rickshaw off the road, leaving the vehicle badly mangled against the tree. Local residents who witnessed the aftermath immediately alerted emergency services, with police and ambulance teams rushing to the scene.

The deceased have been identified as Indrajit Shakya (55), his wife Leela Shakya (52), their son Shubham Shakya (30), Shubham's wife Shagun, and Preeti Kashyap (60), who was Shubham's mother-in-law visiting from Meerut. These include Preeti (20), Shubham's sister; two young boys, Priyansh (5) and Aarav (6), who are Shubham's sons; and Rajesh Kumar (28), the auto-rickshaw driver.
"Rajesh sustained severe head injuries and remains in critical condition at the Trauma Center," police officials confirmed. "The two children and the woman are undergoing treatment for their injuries." Family members revealed that the group, residents of Ghas Mandi area, had departed their home around 12:30 AM for temple prayers and were returning when the crash occurred.
