A 39-year-old Florida man has been taken into custody after authorities say he orchestrated a sophisticated retail theft operation, using inexpensive taco seasoning packets to pilfer trading cards valued at nearly $40,000 from Target stores statewide.
The Alleged Theft Method
According to police reports, Keith Wallis of Palm Beach executed a series of thefts at various Target locations spanning from Miami to Orlando between July 2025 and February 2026. Investigators detail that Wallis would enter the stores and select large boxes of highly collectible trading cards, which can command significant prices among enthusiasts, alongside cheap taco seasoning packets.
At the self-checkout kiosks, Wallis is accused of scanning and paying only for the low-cost seasoning packets, then exiting the stores with the valuable trading card boxes without proper payment. This deceptive tactic allowed him to bypass security measures and avoid detection during the transactions.
Financial Impact and Legal Charges
The Florida Attorney General's Office press release indicates that Target incurred losses exceeding $10,000 from approximately 75 separate incidents linked to Wallis. After allegedly stealing the goods, authorities say he sold the trading cards online, primarily through eBay, generating nearly $40,000 in revenue from these illicit sales.
Wallis now faces serious felony charges, including organized retail theft, dealing in stolen property, and money laundering. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 90 years in the Florida Department of Corrections, highlighting the severe legal consequences for such crimes.
