Former Himachal Pradesh High Court Judge Justice Surinder Singh Thakur Passes Away at 74

Shimla: Justice Surinder Singh Thakur, a distinguished former judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and former judicial member of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) regional bench at Chandimandir, passed away on Monday morning. He was 74 years old.

Brief Illness Leads to Demise at PGIMER

Justice Thakur breathed his last at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh following a brief illness. His death marks the end of a remarkable legal career spanning several decades, characterized by significant contributions to the judiciary and public service.

Final Rites and Family

The former judge was cremated on Monday evening at his native village, Bakhog, located in Rajgarh tehsil of Sirmaur district. He is survived by his wife, Nirmal Thakur, and three married daughters, who mourn the loss of a beloved family member and respected legal luminary.

Illustrious Legal Career and Appointments

Justice Thakur's journey in law began as a practicing lawyer in Rajgarh. His dedication and expertise led to his appointment as an additional district and sessions judge in January 1990. Over the years, he served with distinction as district and sessions judge in Hamirpur, Mandi, and Solan districts, earning a reputation for fairness and integrity.

In a significant role, he also served as the legal remembrancer-cum-secretary (law) to the Himachal Pradesh government, where he played a crucial part in shaping legal policies and frameworks for the state.

Elevation to High Court and Post-Retirement Service

Justice Thakur was elevated to the bench of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on November 27, 2006, a position he held until his retirement on September 23, 2013. His tenure was marked by numerous landmark judgments and a steadfast commitment to justice.

Even after retirement, his service continued. In March 2015, he was appointed as a judicial member of the Armed Forces Tribunal's Chandigarh regional bench at Chandimandir, where he adjudicated matters related to the armed forces with the same diligence and expertise.

Recent Government Appointment and Legacy

In December last year, the Himachal Pradesh government recognized his vast experience by appointing him as the chairperson of the state selection committee under Rule 87(i) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Model Rules, 2016. This appointment was for a term of three years, highlighting his ongoing involvement in social and legal causes.

Justice Thakur, who settled in Solan after retirement, was widely regarded as a gentleman judge. He was known for his keen legal acumen, strong commitment to social causes, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people of Himachal Pradesh. His passing leaves a void in the legal community and among those who benefited from his wisdom and service.
