Vizianagaram Police Crack Down on Honey-Trapping Gang
In a significant breakthrough, the Vizianagaram district police have apprehended four individuals, including a married couple, for their involvement in a honey-trapping, assault, and robbery scheme. The arrests were made on Saturday following a detailed investigation into a case that highlights the dangers of online interactions turning into real-world crimes.
Details of the Arrested Individuals
The suspects have been identified as P Kiran and his wife, P Usha, both residents of the Pendurthi locality in Visakhapatnam. Additionally, B Yernibabu and P Prasad were taken into custody. According to police reports, the couple meticulously examined social media profiles to select potential targets for their illicit activities.
Modus Operandi of the Gang
Usha played a pivotal role by initiating contact through WhatsApp messages and calls, engaging in conversations to build trust. One victim, VS Ramesh, a 28-year-old from Vizag city, fell prey to this tactic. After several days of chatting, Usha invited Ramesh for a casual meeting at the Alamanda market in Jami mandal, Vizianagaram district, on February 14.
Upon arriving at the designated spot, Ramesh was ambushed by Kiran, Yernibabu, and Prasad. The trio threatened him with a knife and used the WhatsApp messages with Usha as leverage for blackmail. They physically assaulted Ramesh, stole his gold chain weighing 18 grams, and demanded a payment of Rs 80,000. The perpetrators issued severe threats, warning Ramesh of dire consequences if he disclosed the incident to anyone.
Police Investigation and Recovery
Based on a formal complaint filed by the victim, the Jami police registered a case on March 3. Through diligent investigative efforts, the authorities identified the accused and successfully apprehended the entire gang. During the operation, the police recovered the stolen gold chain, a motorcycle, and multiple mobile phones, which are believed to have been used in the honey-trapping scheme.
