Four Arrested in Dhenkanal Minor Rape-Murder Case; Police Seize Crucial Evidence

In a significant development in the alleged rape and murder case of a Plus II student in Dhenkanal district, police have arrested three associates of the prime suspect, bringing the total number of arrests to four. The arrests were made on Sunday, following the initial apprehension of the main accused a day earlier.

Accused Produced in Court, Bail Pleas Rejected

All four individuals—prime accused Jaga alias Gangadhar Patra (38), along with his aides Chandan Kumar Naik (26), Rasananda Naik (64), and Madan Mohan Patra (40)—were presented before the court on Sunday. Their bail applications were firmly rejected, and they have been remanded to judicial custody as the investigation progresses.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The 16-year-old victim went missing on March 18, and her body was discovered near the village panchayat office the following day. Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar stated that preliminary findings suggest she was raped and murdered. The exact cause of death is pending confirmation from the post-mortem report.

According to police sources, Patra, who works as a bus driver, allegedly lured the minor girl to his residence, where he sexually assaulted her. He then enlisted the help of his associates to dispose of her body near the panchayat office. Police suspect that the murder occurred before the body was dumped. Notably, two of the accused are reported to be relatives of Patra.

Evidence Seized and Forensic Examination

In a crucial step, police have seized multiple pieces of evidence, including a white SUV believed to have been used to transport the body, three mobile phones, the victim's college bag, and blood-stained clothing. On Saturday, officers conducted a crime scene recreation and sent vital evidence for forensic analysis to bolster the case.

Political Reactions and Public Outrage

The incident has ignited widespread outrage, with opposition parties criticizing the government over women's safety concerns. In contrast, the BJP has pointed to the swift police action as evidence of the government's zero-tolerance policy against sexual violence perpetrators.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps

SP Sonkar emphasized that the case remains under active investigation. "We are awaiting forensic and post-mortem reports to establish the full sequence of events. A charge sheet will be filed against the accused soon," he stated. The police are committed to ensuring a thorough probe to deliver justice in this heinous crime.
