The Fatal Attack and Immediate Arrests
According to the police, the fatal altercation occurred on Thursday, January 1. Mukesh Baghel was attacked with knives and died on the spot. Acting swiftly, the Mohali police managed to apprehend four suspects by Friday. The arrested accused have been identified as 45-year-old Chaturbhuj, also known as Ajay Mishra, a resident of Gali No. 11 in Jujhar Nagar; 18-year-old Shiv Kumar, alias Sheebu, from Pasrampur village in Mainpuri district, UP; and 21-year-old Arjun Mishra and 18-year-old Manish Kumar, alias Munna, both from Kalyanpur in Sultanpur district, UP.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Karan Sandhu stated that Shiv Kumar was the one who attacked Baghel with a knife, leading to his death. The police confirmed that all four accused would be presented before a district court on Saturday.
Roots of the Conflict: A Dispute on New Year's Eve
Investigations reveal that the murder was the violent culmination of a dispute that erupted on the night of December 31. Brijesh Baghel, the victim's younger brother, provided a detailed account of the events leading to the tragedy.
"We live in Gali No. 10 of Jujhar Nagar, while our aunt's daughter lives in Gali No. 11," Brijesh said. He explained that on New Year's Eve, his brother-in-law Balbir was drinking with neighbours, who allegedly began abusing their father, Lakhan. The aunt's daughter informed the family about the incident over the phone.
The tension spilled over to the next morning, when Mukesh Baghel was confronted by Arjun Mishra and his accomplices. They surrounded him and launched a deadly knife attack, killing the young vendor.
A Life Cut Short: The Victim's Story
The murder has left a family shattered and a community in mourning. Mukesh Baghel, who originally hailed from Madhya Pradesh, lived with his family in a rented accommodation in Jujhar Nagar. He was the sole breadwinner for his young family.
Mukesh earned his livelihood by running a golgappa (pani puri) cart in Bahlolpur. His daily routine of serving the popular street snack was how he supported his wife and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. His untimely death has plunged his family into grief and financial uncertainty.
The Mohali police have stated that further investigation into the Jujhar Nagar murder case is underway to uncover any additional details or motives behind the gruesome crime.
