Four Arrested in Rudrapur Gangrape Case, One Accused Attempts Suicide
In a shocking incident in Rudrapur, four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a married woman that occurred on the night of February 22. Among those detained is the 19-year-old brother-in-law of the survivor, who police say failed to intervene during the assault.
Details of the Arrests and Suicide Attempt
Acting on intelligence inputs, police first apprehended three accused individuals, aged between 19 and 28, near the Rudrapur district hospital late Wednesday night. During the operation, authorities seized the motorcycle used in the commission of the crime. Meanwhile, a fourth accused, a 23-year-old man, attempted suicide by consuming poison before being taken into custody. He was found in a critical condition at Nagina railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Dhampur district.
The critically ill individual was handed over by the Government Railway Police (GRP) to the Udham Singh Nagar police and subsequently admitted to the district hospital for urgent medical treatment. This development adds a grim layer to an already distressing case.
Sequence of the Alleged Crime
According to police reports, the alleged sexual assault took place around 9 PM when the woman, who is in her late twenties, was returning home from a fair accompanied by her brother-in-law. Three acquaintances of the brother-in-law allegedly intercepted them on two motorcycles, threatened them at gunpoint, and forcibly took the woman to a secluded location.
At the isolated spot, the three men are accused of taking turns to rape the survivor. Disturbingly, they also video-recorded the entire assault. One of the perpetrators allegedly injured the woman's finger with a knife during the incident. Following the assault, the accused threatened to kill her and publicly release the recorded video if she reported the crime to authorities.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
The survivor courageously filed a formal complaint at the Rudrapur police station on Tuesday, leading to the registration of a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). To address the gravity of the situation, sections 3(5) and 115(2) were later added to the case to account for common intention and failure to prevent the offence.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Ganpati stated that special investigation teams were immediately formed to analyze CCTV footage, collect forensic evidence, and conduct targeted raids. "Our investigation indicates that the survivor's brother-in-law enabled his friends to commit this heinous crime. There will be zero tolerance for crimes against women," SSP Ganpati emphasized.
