Ambedkar Nagar Court Delivers Life Sentences in Decade-Old Murder Case
In a significant verdict, the additional district and sessions court in Ambedkar Nagar has sentenced four men to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a 19-year-old girl that occurred in 2014. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each convict, marking a decisive conclusion to a case that has lingered for nearly a decade.
Acquittal of Victim's Mother and Uncle
Notably, the court acquitted the victim's mother and uncle, who had been chargesheeted by the police in connection with the crime. This decision came after the prosecution's initial theory—that the murder was committed to conceal an alleged illicit relationship between the two—collapsed during the trial under rigorous scrutiny.
Details of the Crime and Conviction
The murder took place on the night of April 20, 2014, in Mohiuddinpur Jagannathpur village within the Sammanpur area of Ambedkar Nagar. The young girl was alone at home while her parents were working in their agricultural field. Upon their return, they discovered her missing, and her body was later found in a nearby field, strangled with a dupatta.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (First) Ram Vilas Singh convicted Ram Bal Chauhan, Vikram Chauhan, Umashankar, and Rajkumar Chauhan for abducting and murdering the girl. The court based its verdict on testimonies from witnesses, including the victim's grandmother and other locals, who testified that the four men had forcibly taken the girl from her house and killed her. After evaluating the evidence, the court found their involvement established beyond reasonable doubt.
Criticism of Police Investigation
The court did not hold back in criticizing the police investigation into the case. Witnesses alleged that the police attempted to shield the real culprits by maligning the relationship between the victim's mother and uncle. This misconduct added a layer of injustice to the tragedy, highlighting flaws in the investigative process that nearly led to the wrongful implication of innocent family members.
This verdict underscores the importance of thorough and unbiased police work in ensuring justice, especially in sensitive criminal cases. It brings a measure of closure to the victim's family after years of legal proceedings and public scrutiny.
