Bengaluru: Four Ugandan women, who were detained in a private ashram at Kothanur due to insufficient space at the detention centre, escaped after breaking the window grills, police said on Monday.
Details of the Escape
The women, identified as Topista, Nagawa, Safinah, and Fitina, had been arrested a few months ago from areas under the Hennur, Puttenahalli, and Parappana Agrahara police station limits. They faced charges including drug peddling and illegal stay in the country.
According to an investigating officer, the lack of space at the detention centre and the state women's home led authorities to place them in a private ashram located at Doddagubbi in Kothanur. The women were confined to a room on the second floor of the ashram.
In the early hours of May 11, they managed to break the window grills, descend to the ground, and flee the premises. The officer confirmed that a search operation has been launched to locate the escaped detainees.
Background of the Case
The four Ugandan nationals were arrested in separate incidents across Bengaluru. Their cases highlight challenges in managing foreign nationals involved in criminal activities, particularly when detention facilities are overcrowded.
Authorities are reviewing security protocols at the ashram and other temporary holding locations to prevent similar incidents in the future. The escape has raised questions about the adequacy of facilities for detainees awaiting legal proceedings.
