A court in Gangavathi, Karnataka, has handed down a significant verdict, sentencing three persons to two years of imprisonment for their involvement in a child marriage case. The principal civil judge and JMFC court announced the decision on Wednesday, convicting the trio under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

According to prosecution details, the incident occurred on May 5, 2021, at 6 a.m. in KD Nagar. The first accused, Mahesh, arranged the marriage of his minor daughter to Eeranna, with Durgamma assisting in the ceremony. This act was in direct violation of laws designed to protect minors from early marriage.

Based on a complaint, a case was registered under sections 9 and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The investigation was led by then PSIs Yallappa, who has since retired, and Sharavva of the Gangavathi Rural police station. They conducted a thorough inquiry, gathering evidence before filing a charge sheet.

Court's Ruling and Sentencing

After a detailed hearing, the court found all three accused guilty of conducting the child marriage. In addition to the two-year jail term, each convict was fined Rs 10,000. The state was represented by APP Niranjana Swamy Hiremath during the proceedings.
