A notorious gangster, Vinay Tyagi, has died after being shot by motorcycle-borne assailants while he was being transported to a court in police custody. The incident occurred on December 24 in Laksar, near Roorkee, and Tyagi succumbed to his bullet injuries at AIIMS Rishikesh on Saturday morning.
Details of the Brazen Custody Attack
The attack was a bold strike against a prisoner under police escort. After being shot, Tyagi was rushed to the hospital where he remained on ventilator support for two days. Medical reports indicated he was hit by three bullets. One bullet pierced the right side of his chest, causing severe internal damage. Dr. Sriloy Mohanty, the public relations officer at AIIMS Rishikesh, stated that a surgery was performed and two bullets were removed. However, the damage from the third bullet proved fatal, and Tyagi passed away around 7:30 am on Saturday.
Police Investigation and Gangster's Criminal Past
Police have arrested two men in connection with the shooting: Sunny Yadav, a convicted murderer, and Ajay Kumar, who is linked to Tyagi's gang. Investigators are examining their call detail records. The assailants used a pistol and a country-made gun in the attack. An FIR has been registered under BNS section 103 for murder at the Laksar police station.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobal revealed that Vinay Tyagi was involved in over 60 criminal cases, including murder, across parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The police theory suggests a possible monetary dispute between Tyagi and Sunny Yadav. "Sunny Yadav possibly had a monetary dispute with Tyagi, due to which he threatened to attack him even in police custody," the SSP told TOI. Tyagi's body was sent for postmortem and later handed over to his family.
Family's Allegations of a Conspiracy
Meanwhile, Tyagi's family has called his death a major conspiracy and accused the police of negligence. They have put forward a serious allegation, claiming that Tyagi was killed at the behest of a contractor whose black money was hidden in Dehradun. The family alleges that Tyagi intended to share this information with security agencies, which led to his elimination. These claims add another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation into the custody attack.
