Marital Discord Ends in Tragedy: Ganjam Couple Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide
A devastating incident of domestic violence has shaken the Saranuapalli village in Ganjam district, where a young couple was found dead in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide. The tragic event unfolded over Monday night and Tuesday morning, leaving a community in mourning and two young children orphaned.
Discovery of the Bodies
On Tuesday morning, local residents alerted authorities after discovering the body of a man hanging from a tree branch on a farm, approximately 200 meters from his residence. Upon arrival at the scene, police officers conducted a search of the nearby home and made a second grim discovery—the body of a woman inside the house.
Both bodies were immediately transported to the Bhanjanagar sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem examinations. The deceased have been identified as Chitrasen Nayak, a 28-year-old laborer, and his 25-year-old wife, Puja Naik. The couple leaves behind two minor sons, aged six and four years.
History of Domestic Strife
According to preliminary police investigations, the tragedy appears to be the culmination of longstanding marital tensions that frequently escalated into violent confrontations. Deepak Mishra, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bhanjanagar, stated that initial evidence points toward a domestic dispute that spiraled out of control.
"Our initial probe suggests that the incident may be a fallout of a domestic dispute that escalated to violence," Mishra explained. He noted that the couple had been married for approximately seven years and were parents to two young boys.
Police reports indicate that Chitrasen and Puja had been embroiled in near-daily quarrels. The situation became so severe that Puja had previously left the family home, relocating to Bhubaneswar with her two children for a six-month period. During her time in the state capital, she worked as a laborer to support herself and her sons.
Final Confrontation
Puja returned to the village on Sunday, leaving her children in the care of her brother-in-law—her husband's younger brother—while she attended to some banking matters. Her return home reignited the volatile relationship dynamics.
On Monday night, neighbors reported hearing intense arguments emanating from the couple's residence. Police believe these quarrels may have escalated into physical violence, ultimately resulting in Chitrasen allegedly attacking his wife with a kitchen knife. Following this violent act, he is suspected to have taken his own life by hanging himself from a nearby tree.
"The man might have been shocked and probably committed suicide," police officials theorized, suggesting that Chitrasen may have been overwhelmed by the consequences of his actions.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the double tragedy. Police plan to interview the deceased couple's relatives to gather more accurate information about the nature of their disputes and the specific events that led to the fatal outcome.
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of unresolved domestic conflicts and the urgent need for intervention mechanisms in rural communities. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding the complete sequence of events and providing support to the two young children who have lost both parents in this heartbreaking incident.
