Gas Delivery Agent Arrested in Visakhapatnam for Stealing and Selling LPG Cylinders

In a significant crackdown on fuel-related crime, the Visakhapatnam city police have arrested a gas delivery agent for allegedly stealing and selling LPG cylinders during the ongoing supply crisis. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in the distribution system amid heightened demand.

Details of the Arrest and Crime

On Sunday, police apprehended Y Appa Rao, a 33-year-old gas delivery agent, following a complaint from the management of Manikanta Indane Gas Agency in Chinagantyada. The Gajuwaka police had registered a case against him on Saturday after he went missing with both filled and empty cylinders.

Appa Rao, a native of Guddipa village in Anakapalle district, had been employed with the agency for two years. Investigations revealed that he exploited the current LPG crisis by collecting OTPs, empty cylinders, and cash from customers, promising timely delivery of refilled cylinders.

Extent of the Theft and Modus Operandi

Police investigations uncovered that Rao diverted a total of 42 cylinders. This included 33 cylinders from customers in Kanithi Road and Chinagantyada areas, and nine cylinders belonging to the agency itself. Additionally, he took Rs 13,500 in cash from customers.

Instead of fulfilling his delivery obligations, Rao sold the cylinders at inflated prices to private individuals who lacked proper gas connections. This illegal activity capitalized on the scarcity and high demand during the LPG crisis.

Police Investigation and Recovery

According to police statements, Rao had been absconding for ten days before authorities traced him to his native village. During the arrest, three cylinders were recovered from his possession. The police have confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine the full scope of his operations and identify all recipients of the stolen cylinders.

Broader Implications

This case sheds light on how individuals might exploit systemic vulnerabilities during periods of resource scarcity. The arrest serves as a warning to others who might consider similar fraudulent activities, while also prompting questions about oversight in the LPG distribution chain.

The Visakhapatnam police have emphasized their commitment to tackling such crimes, particularly those that affect essential services during times of crisis.
