Goa Gangrape Case: Two Youths Arrested for Alleged Assault Under Zuari Bridge
In a distressing incident in Goa, a 22-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by two youths below the Zuari bridge at Cortalim on March 17, while she was under the influence of alcohol. The Agasaim police have swiftly arrested both accused, identified as 25-year-old Macwin Piedade Andrade from Nuvem and 21-year-old Rowan Jose Abranches from Verna, following a detailed investigation.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to police reports, the survivor had visited Siridao beach to collect shells when she was befriended by the two youths. After spending time together on the beach and consuming liquor, the woman, who was unable to ride her two-wheeler due to intoxication, became a pillion rider on one of the accused's vehicles. The other accused rode her two-wheeler as they left the beach.
The trio then proceeded to a liquor shop in Cortalim, where they purchased more alcohol, an act captured by CCTV cameras. Subsequently, they went below the Zuari bridge, where the alleged gangrape occurred.
Police Action and Arrests
The next day, the survivor approached the Agasaim police station and filed a formal complaint, stating she was under the influence of alcohol during the assault. Police immediately registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation.
Using technical surveillance and evidence from the CCTV footage, authorities identified the accused. Both individuals were promptly arrested and have been remanded to five-day police custody, as confirmed by Agasaim Police Inspector Anant Gaonkar.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about women's safety and the risks associated with alcohol consumption in public spaces. The police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice for the survivor and maintaining law and order in the region.
