Goa Police File Case Against Senior Citizen for Alleged Stray Dog Killing
In a distressing incident from North Goa, the Colvale police have officially registered a criminal case against a 64-year-old man, Dilip Khorjuvekar, for the alleged brutal killing of a stray dog. The case stems from accusations that Khorjuvekar beat the animal to death and then callously disposed of its carcass in a river at Camurlim in the Bardez region.
Formal Complaint by Animal Welfare Society Triggers Police Action
The registration of this case was initiated after the North Goa District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) lodged a formal complaint with the authorities. According to the detailed complaint filed by the DSPCA, the stray dog was subjected to severe and unprovoked physical abuse near the Camurlim jetty on March 27.
The allegations state that Khorjuvekar allegedly assaulted the defenseless animal with a baton, inflicting fatal injuries, before abandoning it in the river, which ultimately led to the dog's death. This act has sparked outrage among local animal rights activists and residents, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal welfare in the area.
Legal Proceedings Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
In response to the complaint, the Colvale police have taken swift legal action by filing a case against Dilip Khorjuvekar under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This section pertains to offenses involving grievous hurt, and its application in this context underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the alleged crime of animal cruelty.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the legal protections in place for animals and the consequences of violating them. Animal welfare organizations are closely monitoring the case, urging for a thorough investigation and appropriate penalties if the allegations are proven true.
Local police officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to gather further evidence and witness statements. The community has been called upon to cooperate with the authorities to ensure justice is served in this tragic case of alleged animal abuse.
