A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in North Goa, which claimed at least 25 lives, was sparked by firecrackers ignited inside the venue, authorities have confirmed. This finding rules out the initial suspicion of a cylinder blast.
Chief Minister Reveals Critical Findings
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant provided the crucial update after a high-level review meeting on Sunday, December 7, 2025. He stated that the preliminary inquiry points to "electric firecrackers" being set off inside Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, which led to the catastrophic blaze.
This official statement directly contradicts the police's initial assessment of a possible cylinder burst, offering a new and definitive cause for one of Goa's deadliest recent tragedies.
Arrests Made and More Expected
In connection with the incident, the state police have already taken four staff members of the nightclub into custody. CM Sawant further announced that the establishment's owners, identified as Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, would also be arrested shortly.
The Chief Minister's revelation supports earlier accounts from eyewitnesses present at the scene, who had reported seeing fireworks being used within the packed venue before the fire erupted.
Tragic Toll and Aftermath
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday, resulted in a horrific loss of life. Among the 25 deceased are 14 staff members of the nightclub, with many victims succumbing to suffocation in the chaotic and smoke-filled environment.
Firefighters battled the flames at the Arpora venue through the night, facing a challenging operation to contain the fire and rescue patrons. The incident has sent shockwaves through the coastal state, renowned for its vibrant nightlife, raising urgent questions about safety protocols and enforcement at entertainment venues.
This remains a developing story. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
