Goa Police Apprehend Two in Major Narcotics Operation
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Goa police on Monday arrested two individuals, including a Nigerian national, for alleged possession of a narcotic substance valued at approximately Rs 15 lakh. The arrests also involved charges related to concealing the identity of a foreign national, marking a notable enforcement action in the coastal state.
Details of the Raid and Seizures
According to SP Rahul Gupta of the crime branch, the operation was conducted at Pilerne Marra, where authorities apprehended Omorigo, a 42-year-old Nigerian citizen. During the raid, police recovered 31.7 grams of a white crystal powder, suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding Rs 15 lakh. A scooter was also seized as part of the investigation, highlighting the methods used in the alleged drug distribution network.
Second Arrest and Concealment Charges
In addition to Omorigo, the police arrested Sudhir Paleinkar, a 42-year-old resident of Sangolda. Paleinkar faces charges for providing his private scooter to the Nigerian national and failing to submit the mandatory Form C to the authorities. This failure effectively hid the identity of the accused foreigner, complicating police efforts to track and monitor such individuals under local regulations.
Investigation Reveals Courier Link
SP Gupta elaborated on the investigation, stating that the parcel containing the suspected narcotics was delivered to Omorigo through a courier service. Paleinkar is alleged to have received this parcel on behalf of the Nigerian national, further implicating him in the illicit activities. This detail underscores the sophisticated logistics often employed in drug trafficking operations, involving both local and international elements.
The arrests highlight ongoing efforts by Goa police to combat drug-related crimes, particularly those involving foreign nationals. The case is expected to proceed with further legal actions as authorities continue to investigate the broader network and sources of the narcotics. Such operations are crucial in maintaining law and order in tourist-heavy regions like Goa, where drug abuse and trafficking pose persistent challenges to public safety and security.
