Goa Police Stations Grapple With Severe Personnel Shortages

In a concerning development for law enforcement in the coastal state, 43 out of 44 police stations in Goa are facing significant shortages of personnel, with only the Mandrem police station reported to be operating at full sanctioned strength. This widespread staffing crisis has raised alarms about police effectiveness across the region.

North and South Goa Stations Hit Hard by Vacancies

The state's police force is divided between 14 stations in North Goa and 17 in South Goa, with an additional 13 specialized stations including crime, cybercrime, and coastal police units. The staffing gaps are particularly acute at key stations.

In North Goa, the Panaji police station requires 50 additional personnel, followed by Pernem needing 36 and Agasaim requiring 34. South Goa faces even more severe shortages, with Vasco police station needing 61 personnel, Colva requiring 51, and Ponda needing 47 additional staff members.

Critical Shortage of Police Sub-Inspectors

The most pressing issue is the shortage of 157 police sub-inspectors (PSIs) across various police stations. This represents a significant gap in supervisory and investigative capacity within the force.

The Goa Staff Selection Commission recently completed a major recruitment drive for 187 PSI positions, including 157 posts for male PSIs and 30 for lady police sub-inspectors (LPSIs). However, this effort met with limited success.

Only 10 of the 30 advertised LPSI positions were filled, as few candidates successfully cleared all selection stages. The commission also struggled to find eligible candidates for PSI posts reserved under the economically weaker section (EWS) category.

Broader Staffing Challenges Across Police Force

This recruitment drive was one of the largest undertaken by the state government for PSI positions in recent years. The sanctioned strength for male PSIs stands at 514, while LPSIs have 100 sanctioned positions.

Overall, the Goa police force faces staffing challenges across multiple categories, with approximately 10% of all posts currently vacant. Of the 10,782 sanctioned positions for Goa police, only around 10,000 have been filled to date.

Ongoing Recruitment Efforts for Multiple Positions

To address these shortages, the Commission has initiated new recruitment drives for numerous positions:

  • 360 posts of police constable (male/female)
  • 119 posts of police constable (armed police)
  • 111 posts of police constable driver (grade III)
  • 60 posts of warden (male)
  • 23 posts of round forester
  • 13 posts of range forest officer
  • 9 posts of forest guard

Additional vacancies include:

  1. 4 platoon commander positions
  2. 4 assistant superintendent (male) posts
  3. 10 matron (female) positions
  4. 5 lascar (male) posts
  5. 2 escort (female) positions
  6. 1 constable (greaser) post
  7. 1 constable (electrician) position

The staffing situation presents a complex challenge for Goa's law enforcement authorities, who must balance recruitment efforts with maintaining operational effectiveness across all police stations.
